Bay Area Rescue Mission: Learn about the beginnings of the Bay Area Rescue Mission,  starting with their founder Larry Wattell and the progression leading up to how they continue to impact the Greater Bay Area today.

About The Bay Area Rescue Mission

They provide food, shelter, warm showers and fresh clean clothes for the body, and the Gospel message of eternal hope for the soul. The Rescue Mission helps meet the basic needs of hurting and homeless men, women, and children in the Bay Area with food and a clean, safe place to sleep.

With more than 7 million people, the Bay Area is a center of culture, education and commerce for the Pacific Rim. But it is also home to more than 35,000 homeless men, women and children. As the area’s largest provider of services to those who are homeless and impoverished, the Bay Area Rescue Mission offers people the help they need to build a brighter tomorrow.

Protection from the elements and from the hazards of street life is essential to their guests’ health and state of mind, especially for women with small children. It also gives them the opportunity to begin addressing their problems.

In 2016, the Rescue Mission provided more than 77,000 nights of shelter and more than 788,000 meals. Nearly half of the concentrated poverty neighborhoods in the Bay Area are in the East Bay.

Silent Voices Book - People with Mental Disorders on the Street by Dr. Robert L. Okin

Silent Voices (Book) by Dr. Robert L. Okin

We avert our eyes when we meet them on the street: homeless mentally ill people with their hand-scrawled signs, shopping carts, and cardboard boxes. Because of our fear and revulsion, we fail to see any human connection with them.

Still, we’re curious: How do they end up on the street? How do they survive the stress and privations of such a life? What combination of biological vulnerabilities, childhood traumas, drugs, mental disorders, and financial devastation brought them down?

And how do some manage, against all odds, to climb out of this desperate situation? Former commissioner of mental health Robert Okin spent two years on the street meeting and photographing homeless individuals with mental illness to find answers to these questions. | Learn more…
