Georgia - Church Hold First Service Since Hurricane Matthew Damage

Rev. Don Spires wants to replace the worn out pews and the dais and the choir loft because they’re unsafe, partly because of structural damage and partly because of a design unfriendly to all but the young and fit. | Image courtesy: (Terry Dickson/Florida Times – Union)

Calvary Baptist Church in Brunswick, Georgia will hold first services since Hurricane Matthew caused damage to the church building. The Rev. Don Spires doesn’t tell a story of a flood of Biblical proportions, but the storm surge pushed a foot of water into the 81-year-old church’s sanctuary, fellowship hall and education wing. It was enough.

“It was horrible,” Spires said. “We were just stunned. The smell. The water actually came from rain and the storm surge. Had it been all rain, it would have been a different story. If it was just rain water, we could get it out, dry it out and move on,” Spires said.

Cleanup Crews Help Rebuild After  Hurricane Matthew

The Georgia Baptist Association called and offered help and Calvary took it. Volunteer Baptist cleanup crews stripped out the dry wall, soaked carpet and insulation from the fellowship and education building. Then they pressure washed the walls and sprayed cleansing agents to kill off any mold spores, all in a matter of a few days.

Inspectors said that probably saved the three-building complex, Spires said. “The remediation man said if they hadn’t done that, there would have bee so much mold we would have had to abandon it,” he said.

In the church’s history, it had never had flood insurance because its insurers and lenders said it didn’t need any.
