CrossFit is an exercise program founded by Greg Glassman in 2000. This program is practiced by members of approximately 7,000 affiliated gyms. It is a strength and conditioning program that focuses on improving muscular strength, cardio-respiratory endurance, and flexibility. It uses a mix of aerobic exercise, gymnastics, and weight lifting.

What exactly is CrossFit? According to their website, “CrossFit begins with a belief in fitness. The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness. We have sought to build a program that will best prepare trainees for any physical contingency — not only for the unknown, but for the unknowable.”

The community that spontaneously arises when people do these workouts together is a key component of why CrossFit is so effective. Harnessing the natural camaraderie, competition and fun of sport or game yields an intensity that cannot be matched by other means.
