According to Dr. Ankur Saraiya, depression and anxiety are two of the most common experiences that people have. He says that many people do not come in for treatment because people will think they’re crazy or they will have to take medication. Dr. Saraiya states that problems with medical illnesses, nutrition or behavior patterns can lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety.

He encourages people to get evaluation so they will know what their options are before deciding what they are going to do about it. He goes on to say, “Be sure to find a psychiatrist who is comfortable not only prescribing medication but also talking about other ways to manage depression and anxiety including psychotherapy and other physical and behavioral modifications.”

Dealing with DepressionSome people with depression are afraid to go see a psychiatrist. Others simply cannot afford to seek professional care. Wherever you may fall on the spectrum, you should know that there are ways to treat your depression. Read and implement the tips in this article to help you fight against this affliction.

Dealing with Depression and Anxiety

Beat depression by developing your interests. Depression robs us by dampening our desire to pursue activities we used to enjoy. Activities and various interests are critical to maintaining a happy, fulfilled frame of mind. Depression, worry, anger, anxiety and other negative emotions can be released through activities, especially if you do them whenever you feel bad.

To beat depression and anxiety, stay busy. The more you have to do (without overwhelming yourself, which can trigger anxiety), the less time you allow yourself to ruminate over thoughts that make you feel depressed. Integrate productive activities with recreational activities to balance out your day and to provide the best mood-lifting benefits.

If you are feeling nervous and want to calm yourself down, you should introduce more complex carbohydrates into your diet. Studies have shown that complex carbohydrates can cause you to relax and help you to calm down, which is great when combating depression, anxiety and nervousness. However, make sure not to overeat.

Why the Right Amount of Sleep Is Vital

Sleeping properly is important for defeating depression. The correct amount of sleep is vital for both body and mental health. Sleep deprivation can aggravate and increase anxiety and worsen the symptoms of depression. If you are having trouble sleeping, speak with your doctor about medication that will help you fall asleep.

Take better care of your health. Depression makes people forget how to take good care of themselves and their health. Depression also masks other feelings, such as anxiety or fear, and depressed people may find themselves staying up late into the night, only to begin the next day feeling even worse. If you find this is happening to you, set and maintain regular bedtimes. If you have trouble sleeping, practice relaxation techniques, such as visualization or self-hypnosis, while in bed.

Dealing with a depressed spouse is difficult. Helping them to overcome depression takes time but can improve with the right persistence. Encourage your spouse to discuss their fears and ask them to be open with the burdens that they may feel. This will help the depressed spouse shed anxiety and negative thoughts and will help them overcome their depressed mood.

Talk About Your Feelings

Oftentimes when we are feeling depressed, we tend to keep quiet. Doing the opposite and talking to someone can actually be more effective. When you keep your feelings bottled up inside it can have negative consequences on your body, mind, and soul. Finding a trusted friend or family member to talk to lets you get things out in the open and releases some of that negative anxiety.
