Mistrial Declared in Freddie Gray Case: Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake held a news conference Wednesday, December 16, 2015, after a judge declared a mistrial in the first of six cases related to the April 19 death of Freddie Gray.

The trial of Officer William G. Porter, the first Baltimore police officer tried in the death of Freddie Gray, ended in a hung jury on Wednesday.  This unexpected outcome complicates the cases against five other officers facing charges in this now infamous case that sparked riots and civil unrest in April 2015.

Authorities have for weeks been preparing for the possibility of more civil unrest in the city.  However, Baltimore remained relatively calm after Judge Barry G. Williams of the Baltimore City Circuit Court declared a mistrial.

According to the New York Times, “Protests were limited and scattered; people hugged during a “prayer line” at North and Pennsylvania Avenues, the center of the spring riots, while several dozen demonstrators converged downtown near City Hall.”
