Nelson Mandela Death: News Announcement By South African Government

Nelson Mandela Death:  The former South African president was sent to prison in 1962 on a charge of inciting a strike.  At the time, he was the commander of the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC).  His continued peaceful resistance while serving 27 years in prison.  This eventually led to the dismantling of his country’s racist and brutal apartheid system.

Mandela was later sentenced to life in prison for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the white government.  He was awarded the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with Frederik Willem de Klerk “for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa”.
