Police Nationwide Tighten Security: The recent murders of three Baton Rouge Police officers have kept the spotlight on Louisiana. The July 5, 2016 shooting death of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge Police began what has been two weeks of national turmoil. Now police across the country are taking precautions.
For better protection, the Boston and Sacramento, California police departments are requiring that two officers be in every patrol unit. The Indianapolis police are ordering officers to go through training on how to recognize an ambush before it happens and what to do if they find themselves the target of one.
Two officers in Baltimore Police Department must now respond to every call. In Cleveland, the police union asked Gov. John Kasich to restrict the state’s open carry laws temporarily for the Republican National Convention in light of the events in Baton Rouge.
According to a memo obtained by CNN, the New York Police Department is doubling up all foot patrols and security posts. Officers are also being instructed to take all meals and personal breaks in pairs. The Baton Rouge shooter, who police have identified as Gavin Long, posted several videos to social media after the recent police shootings. Police believe that Long, the gunman was in the city for several days before he carried out his deadly ambush. Long was a 29-year-old United States Marine Corps veteran from Kansas City, Mo.
