Portland Rescue Mission: Homelessness is no exclusive club. Ask anyone who comes to the Mission for help, and they’ll say, “No, I never expected my life to be like this.” But there is hope. Through the faithful support of friends like you, Portland Rescue Mission shines the way home for souls who feel lost and alone.

About The Portland Rescue Mission

Since the Portland Rescue Mission was founded in 1949 by John Van Diest Sr., they have had a tireless commitment to breaking the cycle of homelessness. The Mission’s motivation for service is based on the salvation and hope found in Holy Bible verse John 3:16 — “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Today, they still offer emergency hot meals and shelter at their original downtown location on 111 West Burnside. Men who come to the Mission for addiction recovery go through a year-long residential program at The Harbor location. The Shepherd’s Door location offers a place of safety and comfort where women and children stay throughout all phases of their journey toward healing.

Emergency Food and Shelter | Recovery Programs

Free hot meals served by smiling volunteers, safe refuge from the weather, 24/7 restrooms that give dignity — and so much more life-giving care. These emergency services so often open the door to deeper relationships where they learn a hurting person’s name, listen to their story, and offer the first steps toward a new life through our recovery programs.

By working together, they can continue to save the lives of men, women, and children in their community. God has called us to care for the hungry, the poor, the homeless, the single mothers, and the fatherless.
