(Vatican City) Given that Pope Francis and President Donald Trump have vocally disagreed on prominent issues in the past, what will the areas of shared agreement be? The two are set to meet at the Vatican Wednesday, May 24, at 8:30 a.m., before Pope Francis’ weekly general audience. President Trump arrives to Italy May 23 after stopping in both Saudi Arabia and Israel as part of his first international trip, which lasts nine days.

U.S. – Mexico Border Wall

During a Feb. 18, 2016, in-flight press conference, the Pope was asked to respond to Donald Trump’s immigration stand, particularly his threat to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.  Pope Francis responded saying “a person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel.” However, he also said that he would “give the benefit of the doubt” to the political candidate.

Climate Change Issues

Trump and Francis also have very divergent opinions on climate change. Francis insisted on the need to protect creation in his environmental encyclical Laudato Si, saying problems such as global warming are caused by human activity.  The Pope gave his full support of the Paris Climate deal in 2015, sending Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to the Nov. 30-Dec. 11 summit as his personal delegate to the gathering.

Pope Francis visits the border between Mexico and the US – (Rome Reports)

(Rome Reports) The Pope traveled by popemobile for about six miles from Ciudad Juarez to the border between Mexico and the United States before starting mass.  Pope Francis wanted to stop at this cross that can be seen from both sides.  He laid a bouquet of flowers underneath the cross to pay respect to all that have lost their lives trying to cross the Rio Grande.

He prayed facing towards the United States then he blessed the people who participated in the ceremony from the other side in El Paso. This was the last mass the Pope held in Mexico and the first in history with the border in between. On one side there were more than 200,000 pilgrims in attendance on the Mexican border, and over 50,000 on the United States border.

Pope Francis used this crozier that was given to him by the prison inmates of Ciudad Juarez who he visited hours earlier. The Pope focused his homely on the suffering of those who try to pass the other side by doing so he made the migrants plight the epicenter of his discourse.  Courtesy: Rome Reports TV News Agency
