How Whey Protein Helps Improve Health and Fitness

In reading an article on the habits of rich people, one of the most important ones had to do with regular exercise and maintaining an excellent diet.

One might wonder what this had to do with being rich. It’s really very simple- you eat well and exercise regularly; this leads to more energy. More energy in turn means being able to get up and go about your daily activities.

But where does whey protein fit in, you might ask?

Whey protein is the perfect supplement considering its rich protein content. Better yet, it speeds up the process improving health and fitness. This has been proven to be the case with many sportsmen, bodybuilders and those involved in the health and fitness industry.

So, it’s only fair that we take a closer look at what whey protein is!

An Introduction to Whey Protein

Simply put, whey is a by-product of cheese production. For a long time, it was treated as waste material until someone discovered how valuable this could be to the sporting community.

It was discovered that there are a number of benefits associated with whey. It contains all the essential amino acids that our body needs to repair itself. But that’s not all – it has the highest protein quality rating, and thus enjoys the distinction of being called a ‘complete protein’.

Rice and Vegetables

Other foods such as rice and vegetables do not contain all these essential amino acids and it is for that reason that whey has received a bit of attention as a superfood in recent times.

That said, it shouldn’t be surprising why whey protein powder is considered to be the best food for not only building lean muscle but also for possessing anti-cancer properties and so on.

But these are just the surface-level benefits associated with whey protein!

How Whey Protein Helps Improve Health and Fitness

These are the ways in which whey protein helps you to achieve good health:

#1: Lose fat and build muscle

One study conducted by the University of Minnesota reduced the calorie intake of peoples’ diets by 500 calories where one group of participants were given whey while the rest were given isocaloric mix beverage. The former group were found to have lost fat while retaining muscle mass better than the second.

#2: Reduce hunger

In an Australian study, a group of obese men were given four different drinks. The drinks that contained 50 grams of whey caused a reduction in the secretion of ghrelin for almost four hours. This hormone tells the brain that you are hungry and which indicated that consuming whey reduces hunger. This is why it makes for an excellent snack instead of the unhealthy party snacks that you’d usually opt for.

#3: Increase muscle size and strength

Researchers from Baylor University conducted tests on 19 men who participated in a 10-week session in resistance training and found that the group that was given casein and whey along with free amino acids gained more – in terms of fat-free masses as well as muscle strength. This was in comparison to those who were given a placebo.

#4: An Improved Immune System

While research has shown that men who are involved in strenuous aerobic activity experienced reduced glutathione levels which could impact immune, gastrointestinal and nervous systems, it was found that whey could help them benefit from a lesser reduction in these levels. If you enjoy longer cardio workouts, make sure you deal with these effects by consuming whey.

Consuming whey protein provides many health benefits; if you would like to get started, it is time to look for a suitable whey protein powder to add to your diet!
