Canada: East Toronto's Shoebox Project brings holiday gifts to homeless women

Co-ordinating the Shoebox Project for Women holiday drive in east Toronto this year is Jennifer Burt-Yanoff.  According to Burt-Yanoff, “It gives them, even if it’s just for a small period of time, a sense of belonging. It’s a powerful reminder for the women that they haven’t been forgotten and that they remain a valued and respected member of the community.”

What To Put In Shoeboxes For Women

Reducing the feelings of isolation and loneliness faced by these women is one of the objectives of the project, which collects and donates decorated shoeboxes filled with items they can use.  The shoeboxes can be filled with multivitamins, sweets, personal hygiene items, winter accessories like hats and scarves, makeup, small journals, gift cards, and other practical and fun items.

Encouragement for Women

“We also encourage donators to include a handwritten note acknowledging and providing encouragement to the women who are going to receive the shoeboxes,” the East York resident said. One of the agencies that will be receiving the shoeboxes this year is the Riverdale Housing Action Group, a community-based non-profit housing provider.

Program co-ordinator Christine Gordon said she hopes to “surprise” 100 women who live in their housing with the shoeboxes. | See the full story here… toronto.com

“I Feel Like Someone Cares” | The Impact of A Shoebox Gift

The holidays are often one of the loneliest times of the year for women experiencing homelessness. A Shoebox is a powerful reminder that she is valuable and not alone; someone in her community is thinking of her.

The Shoebox Project for Women collects and distributes gift-filled Shoeboxes to women impacted by homelessness in communities across Canada and the US.  Each shoebox is filled with items that can enhance self-esteem and reduce feelings of isolation for women in need.
