Colorado: Denver man takes sanctuary in church to avoid ICE deportation

Faced with the possibility of immediate deportation on Dec. 10 at his immigration check-in, Jorge Araiza Ávila, 31, instead moved into the building that hosts Park Hill United Methodist Church and Temple Micah, advocates announced this week. Araiza Ávila’s family recently received approval to join him.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has a policy that doesn’t allow agents to enter sensitive locations such as houses of worship or schools for enforcement unless there are exigent circumstances, other law enforcement officers lead them there or they have prior approval from a supervisor.

Araiza Ávila entered the United States with his parents illegally from Mexico more than 20 years ago when he was 9 or 10 years old.
