Lizzie asks…

I want to do medical missions outreach work in a different country?

I always hear about people going to countries in central/south america and building schools, teaching, or spreading God’s word. I am not a part of any church, but i was wondering if there are any credible organizations that do these types of trips for high school students.  I want to travel and help people. I am looking into some sort of medical career in the future (dentistry, optometry, medicine, etc.) and i know that once i get the needed degree, i can help people a lot more.
Right now though, I would like to maybe teach or bring supplies or help build houses and other facilities. I would really like to do medical mission outreach work in a Spanish speaking country because I am becoming fluent and would like an opportunity to practice.

Cee Harmon answers:

Hi Lizzie,

You can have a look at the Projects Abroad website at:  http://www.projects-abroad.org.

According to their website, “Medical interns can be high school students interested in becoming a doctors, undergraduate college students on the pre-med track, students taking a gap year, medical school students or doctors. Everyone and anyone is welcome to sign up for a medical missions outreach internship in any of 16 different countries with Projects Abroad.  Anyone interested in learning about medical missions outreach, medicine and volunteering abroad can participate; you only need to fill out the application, provide a reference and be at least 16 years-old.”
