The Midnight Mission: Los Angeles has the largest population of homeless in the United States. Most of which can be found in an area known as “Skid Row.”

About The Midnight Mission

The Midnight Mission is a human services organization based in the “Skid Row” area of downtown Los Angeles, California (USA).  The organization was founded by businessman and lay minister Tom Liddecoat in 1914.  They offer a path to recovery and self-sufficiency to men, women and children who have become homeless and destitute.

The Mission Statement of TMM: (1) To offer a bridge to self-sufficiency for homeless people through counseling, education, training and job placement. (2) To make available the necessities of life to homeless people: food, shelter, clothing, personal hygiene needs, and medical care. (3) To offer the 12-step approach to recovery. (4) To serve homeless people with empathy and respect, without sermonizing. (5) To provide for the homeless as an independent social service agency.

TMM does not rely on government funding. Ninety-five percent of their funding comes from individuals, private organizations and foundations.  The Midnight Mission continues to serve over 90,000 meals a month.  Their daily meal service is a vital first step toward living a self-sufficient life. The community trusts them and relies on this vital service.

The Midnight Mission - Volunteer Success Story - Georgia Berkovich

Georgia Berkovich: “Today my life has meaning and purpose thanks to my sobriety and The Midnight Mission.” | Image courtesy: midnightmission.org

Georgia Berkovich’s Story:  “I started volunteering at The Midnight Mission (when I got sober) in 1993 as a holiday volunteer. I had lost everything, hit bottom and was in the process of rebuilding my life.  There was a group of people from my home group coming down to volunteer and I just followed what everyone else was doing.  Plus, I was interested in TMM because I have always had a deep and profound fear of being homeless.|

“In fact, it has been one of my greatest fears most of my life.   This seemed like a good way to face my fear head-on.  When I would volunteer here I felt a kinship to the people here on our streets AND I felt completely powerless to help in any way.  It was heartbreaking.   I had been living paycheck to paycheck for most of my life. I knew that could be me or anyone else, for that matter, homeless and on our streets.  In 2009, I was out of work, and had been on disability for a while…”  Read full story at:   http://themidnightmission.tumblr.com
