Sandy asks…

What is Christian love? How does it differ from human love? How can a Christian show true love?

1 Corinthians 13 gives a wonderful description of love. But what is true Christian love? Based on the life of Christ, how are Christians to love one another and how does this differ from mere human emotions and actions? What is it about the love of Christ that elevates Christian love above human love?

Cee Harmon answers:

Christian love, as described in the Holy Bible, is much more that brotherly or sexual love. One of the Greek words used to describe love is

Agape, and this is a higher, more elevated and principled love. It is the type of love displayed by Jesus when he gave up his life for sinful humanity.

“This is love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another… Whoever loves God must also love his brother” (1 John 4:7-21). Jesus himself said “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father’s commands and remain in his love… Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his friend” (John 15:9-13).

Here we have the essence of true, Godly, Christian love. This is a love that is obedient unto death, a love that submits to the sovereignty of our Creator. This is a love so pure that only Jesus was able to save sinful humanity by laying down his life for others.
