Coffee is a strong antioxidant, and has many possible health benefits that can include protecting against type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, liver cancer, and promoting a healthy heart.
Another reason not to drink coffee first thing in the morning has to do with our internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. It’s responsible for the release of the hormone called cortisol, which is released under stress but which also effects your energy levels.
If you drink coffee on an empty stomach too often, the hydrochloric acid your body produces will damage your stomach lining. That goes for decaffeinated coffee too. In addition to the stomach lining damage, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can give you some other unpleasant side effects.
Drinking coffee on an empty stomach can also heighten anxiety symptoms, causing jitters, an increased heart rate, irritability, and an inability to focus.
