Elevate Christian Network :: Promise in Scripture

What is the most hard hitting promise in scripture? I’m sure all of us could list our favorites. Until recently I would have immediately said

Romans 8:28. I have attached 95% of my hope on what I describe as its “magnificent promise” of redemption.

These days, however, the Holy Spirit has been pointing at Romans 10:13 in front of me, like an umpire trying to grab the attention of everyone . What it says is straightforward, yet exceptionally important: “All who call on the Name of the Lord will be saved.” There are a couple of ways to penetrate this promise.

1) From the first time I stumbled upon it 30 years ago, I have been using it to pin down my hope for eternal salvation in a linked ring with John 3:16 and Romans 10:9. This is gigantic! If you have these “3 witnesses” you can rest assured that you are going to make it to heaven. This use of Romans 10:13 made my hope of salvation for the next life unfailing, but I mistakenly limited what it was proclaiming by considering it was exclusively about the next life.

2) This pledge of God in fact made its first appearance in the Hebrew Scriptures (Joel 2:32) where it was a commitment about salvation for this life–not the next! People weren’t thinking that far in the future. They desired and looked for God to be protecting them in every “right now” moment of difficulty or abuse!

Paul was expanding on God’s work, stretching Joel’s word into a pledge of heavenly life. Praise God for that, but have we contracted the promise in scripture? In the church we are very nearly obsessed with salvation as an eternity issue. It is that, but it is also much more than that. Anything in your life that doesn’t compare with heaven needs God’s redemption–and He desires to offer it to you. Saving help is also for right now!

Don’t leave this promise of scripture “on the shelf” as a “been there, done that” saved-for-heaven issue. You need it daily! At any time you are tempted, on any occasion you lose Christ’s peace, every time you are oppressed , whenever you need advice, each time you need grace or saving help, call on his name!

His commitment is that you will be saved if you call. Beyond any doubt His help is promised to go to you, as long as you persevere in calling on Him. So call and keep on calling. His rescue is promised to show up. See how powerful this is? Apply it to everything and revel in the on-going salvation of the Lord!
