Remembering Nelson Mandela: He served as the first black president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 . Prior to being elected president, he led nonviolent campaigns against the racist policies of the South African government for 20 years. In 1962, Mandela was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiracy to overthrow the state. He served 27 years in prison before being released in 1990. As a philanthropist, he focused on charitable work through the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He has received more than 250 honors during his lifetime, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize. Mandela played a major part in bringing an end to apartheid — a system of racial discrimination and segregation in South Africa. Nelson Mandela (July 18, 1918 – December 5, 2013).
