Hurricane Irma: “This storm is massive, and the storm surges predicted will go on for miles,” Florida Governor Rick Scott said during a news conference. “Storm surge and extreme winds are the biggest concerns right now.”
Hurricane Irma – Massive Category 5 Storm
Irma made landfall as a Category 5 storm in the Caribbean early Wednesday. It killed at least two people and seriously injured two others on the islands of Saint Barts and Saint Martin, a French official said. At least one person also died in Barbuda, said Midcie Francis, a spokeswoman for Antigua & Barbuda’s National Office of Disaster Services.
Widespread flooding and power outages were reported on all three islands. In Florida, mandatory evacuations began on Wednesday for visitors to Monroe County, which encompasses the southernmost point of the state, including the Florida Keys. A mandatory evacuation has been issued for residents of the county as of Wednesday evening.
Mandatory Evacuations and Empty Store Shelves
In his press conference Wednesday afternoon, Scott reiterated that warning. “This is serious and we cannot take chances,” he said. “This is life-threatening. This is not a storm you can sit and wait through.” As South Floridians scramble to prepare for Irma’s impact, many supermarkets have struggled to keep up with demand, leaving many store shelves barren and gas pumps empty.
“One of our top priorities right now is fuel availability,” Scott said. “We’re moving as much fuel through the system as fast as possible.” On Tuesday, Scott activated 100 members of the Florida Air and Army National Guard to assist the state with logistics and planning as Irma loomed off the state’s eastern coast.
He said on Wednesday that he had activated another 900 members throughout the state, and by Friday the remaining 6,000 members would be reporting for duty. Read the full story…. nbcnews.com
