Winter Storm Jonas: Blizzard Warnings from D.C. to New York City

Winter Storms Jonas caused states of emergency and blizzard warnings to be issued, from the Southern United States to major cities in the Northeast. According to the Weather Channel, “Washington D.C. and Baltimore are now under blizzard warnings, and the region can expect the following impacts from Jonas: Upwards of 2 feet of snow in Washington D.C. and western Maryland starting Friday. Wind gusts over 40 mph possible Friday night through Saturday, leading to dangerous or impossible travel conditions.”
On Thursday morning, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, and D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared states of emergency. These declarations will free up government resources to be used for winter weather situations.
The National Weather Service has now issued blizzard warnings in northern Virginia, Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. Heavy snow, strong winds and low visibility will bring travel to a grinding halt, between late Friday and Sunday morning. See latest updates…weather.com

After a steady downpour all night, tens of millions of people from Mississippi to Massachusetts woke up Saturday morning covered in snow. Treacherous driving conditions forced the closure of highways in Kentucky and Pennsylvania, leaving thousands of motorists stranded.
Thousand of flight cancellations in the U.S. have been caused by airlines shutting down all flights to and from Philadelphia, Washington D.C.and New York City. According to the The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Metrorail, Metrobus and MetroAccess service will be suspended until Sunday, January 24, 2016.
New York City, Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a travel ban on Saturday, effective after 2:30 p.m. Subway services will be shut down and the streets and highways of the city will be closed to vehicular traffic. (A photo of the travel ban documents were tweeted from the Bill deBlasio’s Twitter account.) Travel is also banned on state roads on Long Island.
