Hurricane Katrina: Remembering the Aftermath 10 Years Later
Elevate Christian Network :: News and Events
Remembering Hurricane Katrina: On the 10-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, survivors of the storm gathered in New Orleans to look back and look ahead with Mayor Mitch Landrieu and former President Bill Clinton. The event was hosted by former CNN Anchor Soledad O’Brien and featured music from local musicians and bands.
How New Orleans Flooded During Hurricane Katrina
The day before Hurricane Katrina hit the New Orleans area, high tides created by the storm’s outer bands causes the level of Lake Pontchartrain to rise and engulf low-lying wetlands and communities outside the levee system. Katrina was the name given to the 11th storm of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season.
The storm strengthened to a Category 5 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, triggering mandatory and voluntary evacuations of about 1.2 million residents of the Gulf Coast of the United States. The storm surge was responsible for more than 50 breaches in New Orleans drainage and navigational canal levees, causing the worst engineering disaster in the history of the United States.
Authorities estimated that 1,833 people died in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in late August 2005, and millions of others were left homeless along the Gulf Coast and in New Orleans. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), it was the most destructive storm to strike the United States and the costliest storm in U.S. history, causing $108 billion in damage.
