U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced Monday an additional 51 million dollars in humanitarian aid to the Sahel region in Africa. he aid will be used to address food insecurity and protect refugees and internally displaced persons in Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger, Kerry said in a statement. “In 2012, an estimated 18.7 million people in the Sahel were at risk of food insecurity, including one million children at risk of severe acute malnutrition,” he said, adding the conflict in Mali that started in January 2012 has made some 450,000 Malians displaced internally or refugees.The new assistance has brought the total U.S. aid to the African region to nearly 520 million dollars since fiscal year of 2012, Kerry noted.
